31 Days of Halloween - Day 31 - otherwise known as Samhain

Well, the final day has arrived!  Well done to all of you that have managed to stay with us the whole month!!  Make sure that you remember to visit the other Wicked Bloggers to see what they have to share today :o)

I've really enjoyed sharing all my different makes through the month, and seeing what everyone else has had to offer too.  I love all the spooky stuff!

Today though I want to share something slightly different, and hope that you don't mind too much.  They are still stamped image cards, but they are more spiritual than spooky.

I am more likely to refer to Halloween as Samhain, you may not be aware that I consider myself a pagan, that is to say that my spirituality is linked to a love of nature and the different seasons of the year; I try to honour this in my daily life - eating local foods when they are in season, rather than imported foods (I believe our bodies are attuned to certain types of food depending on weather and amounts of sunshine, etc) and I keep myself aware of how the days lengthen and shorten as the year cycles through the season.  I follow what is true to me, but I certainly don't want to enforce it on anyone else, but I thought it would be apt to share a creation that reflected this view of the season.

The phoenix on the left is from Third Coast Stamps, as is the sentiment below it, I've coloured it with promarkers.  Unfortunately I do not know where the Goddess image in the second card is from as I bought it second hand, but I think she is lovely.  The sentiment on this card is handwritten.

I often think of Samhain as a time to reflect on the year that has gone before, and then to turn my thoughts inwards to focus on what I would like to develop in the upcoming year.  Much in the same way as harvests have finished, and that seeds are planted to over-winter and then to grow in the Spring.  It is also a time that pagans honour those that they have lost, as with The Day of Dead in Mexico, we believe that those that have been lost to us can draw close at this time, and so we make an effort to remember them.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 30

Wow! Welcome to the penultimate day on the wonderful Smeared and Smudged bloghop - 31 Days of Halloween!!  If you haven't already do visit the other Wicked Bloggers following the links on my sidebar.

Today's offering is a pair of steampunk vampires, showcased on Tim Holt's die-cut cabinet cards.

 I've cut 4 of the cabinet cards - 2 for the front and 2 for the back - and used Tim's Coloured Crackle technique - as shown in his Compendium of Curiosities III - page 53.  I cant share the steps of this process as it is the focus for the latest CC3C organised by Linda Ledbetter which you can find here http://lindaledbetter.com/2014/10/compendium-of-curiosities-3-challenge-14.html . I think it gives an authentic worn leather look when shown in the browns I have used, but it's amazing how different it can look in different colours.

The centerpieces are a pair of free digi stamps that I got here http://craftymomentscardmaking.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/steampunk-vampire-digis.html.  I've coloured them with promarkers but kept the colours quite muted to give them an older look.

As I am wanting to enter this into the CC3C challenge mentioned above I decided to have a look at the requirements of the other fabulous Tim Holt themed challenge site - A Vintage Journey - and found that the current theme is Halloween using Tim's die-cuts - bonus!!  So as its been a while since I've entered either I thought I would combine the two.

I wanted to use slightly 3d embellishments so i die-cut some of Tim's cogs from black cardstock and then went over them with a metallic bronze pen.  I have also added some of Finnabair's mechanicals and a small Prima rose which I've also highlighted bronze.

I really like the finished project and hope that you do too!

31 Days of Halloween - Day 29!!

Today is another card, but rather than a colored image this one is a simple embossed one with a little stamped sentiment in the middle.

The card was originally white but I have coloured it with Distress Inks in Spiced Marmalade and  Brushed Corduroy.   It actually doesn't look as patchy in reality, so I'm a little disappointed with the photo, but that's how it goes sometimes.

The sentiment in the middle is from a great Artistic Outpost Halloween set and is stamped in Stampin'Up Soft Suede.

Then I've simply matted it onto a slightly large piece of black cardstock.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 28

Hi - I'm sharing another card with you today, a little late again I'm afraid our UK clocks have just changed - they go back an hour, and it always takes me a while to get used to it!!

The centrepiece of this card is by Simply B and was offered as a free digital stamp by them in conjuction with Kit and Clouder who do online colouring classes.  They offered it to be used in a Facebook challenge, which was to colour her in monochrome but with a splash of colour.

I used my grey and black promarkers for the main part and then bright pink to bring out her Day of the Dead make-up.  I've then matter her up on a piece of grey card set at an angle on top of a square black card.  The sentiment, just 'Halloween' for which I've used lettered brads on a peice of bright pink card to tie in with the colouring.

I'm still not completely happy with my colouring but I think it is getting better, I'm promising myself the Kit and Clouder classes when I have some spare pennies (maybe a Christmas present :o)  ).

31 Days of Halloween - Day 27

Hi again - I've been racing against time to get this posted on time as we went on a last minute overnight trip yesterday and I only took my promarkers with me and a couple of images to colour but no cardstock or anything else. We got back about 90 mins ago so it's been dash dash dash!!

I've used a lovely digital stamp of a vampire stepping out of her coffin,but for the life of me I can't remember where I got her from - I will rack my brains and then hopefully be able to update this post with the details.   Note to self - in future when saving digital stamps keep the site name in the title!!

The frame is a lovely layered arch with a corner cobweb from Tando and I've used three distress inks on the back piece, Spiced Orange, Bundled Sage and Dusty Concord to give a smoky feel to it then the arch itself I've coloured with Brushed Corduroy. I've then picked out the cobweb with a metallic silver pen although I don't think it shows too well on the photo.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 26

So Day 26 - here we go :)

Today I'm sharing a Pumpkin King.

The pumpkin is a paper maché one and I've coloured it with sharpies.  I wasn't sure that would be enough, so I left it for a while as I thought I might need to go over it again with paints or something but when I came back to it I was really pleased with the colour. It's maybe a little difficult to see against my red wall - sorry!

The crown actually came from my trip to visit family in New Orleans earlier this year - we were there for some of the parades (not the main Mardi Gras though) and as the floats go by they throw beads, stickers and toys - all sorts really - and this crown was on a bright beaded necklace - I just knew I'd find a use for it and this seemed perfect!

 I've then stood him on a little wooden stand ( the sort you use for crystal eggs) and added a stamped 'happy Halloween '.

This photo is taken from a little further away so it gives a bit better impression of how he looks on my mantelpiece.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 25

So we're into the final week! Hard to believe October's going so fast!

Today I'm sharing another card with you.

I've used a tombstone digistamp from Delicious Darkness as the central image here on a black base card with a central strip of paper from Pink Paislee's Hocus Pocus collection. In the centre of the tombstone I've added a laser cut skull from That Craft Place, which I've coloured over with a promarker in Umber.  The sentiment is stamped in orange and then embossed with clear powder.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 24

Thanks for visiting - hope you're enjoying the Smeared and Smudged blog hop - do remember to visit the other Wicked Bloggers who are sharing their makes - the links are all in my sidebar.  I can't believe we're so far through already!!

Today I'm sharing a witch's wand that I've made for a swap; the tags I've shown over the previous two days are some of the extras I'm putting in :o)

For the swap we were supposed to alter a toy fairy wand but I didn't have one to hand so I looked around for something else I could use instead.  I came across one of my old paintbrushes that I hadn't cleaned properly (oops) and the bristles were really hard, so not much use as a paintbrush anymore.  I decided to paint it black and then work from there.

 

The next step was to wrap it in an organza ribbon that had silver cobwebs and spiders on it.

For the end of the wand I attached a black beaded tassel and added a couple of metal charms and a skull bead into it; I also added a square cork pad on the flat bit where the bristles are, painted it black and secured a bit of black card on top which I had stamped with a five pointed star.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 23

Here are the rest of the witch's tags from yesterday's post - sorry to make you wait (again!)

Firstly a snapshot of what they looked like when the ink sprays had dried.

The sprays used were a mixture of Glimmer Mists and Dylusions.  The effect on the black one doesn't show too well on the photo unfortunately but it has a really nice metallic/luminous finish on it.

With the first one, I printed out and added a digital tag from Ephemera's Vintage Garden and a Happy Halloween digital stamp with witch from Rubber Stamping, and a little charm of a boot.

On the black tag I've stamped 'The Witch's Rule of Three' by Cherry Pie Art Stamps they have an amazing range of different and unusal stamps.  I used a light bronze metallic ink pad for this.  The coloured image is the digital stamp Earth Mother from Delicious Doodles.  I've then just added a piece of filigre metal to the front of the tag.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 22

Today I'm sharing a 2 from a set of witch themed tags that I've made to send off as a little extra with a swap. The swap itself is a witches wand and I will share that another time.  Not a very exciting share today I'm afraid but a step towards a nice little gift.

The first tag was one I received in a little bundle of extras I got with another swap. Being in a dark burgundy card I thought it would look good with this cosmic shimmer lapis black embossing.   The stamps that I have embossed was from a set of magickal themed stamps I was lucky to find for sale second hand.

The second little tag was originally cream but I've coloured it with Spiced Marmalade distress inks, with just a little Brushed Corduroy around the edge. The little cat is die cut from glittered black cardstock.


I've then created two larger tags, cutting one from cream cardstock and the other from black. I've then used ink sprays to create some really nice backgrounds, but I'm waiting for them to dry before I go any further so I will share them tomorrow when I've finished them off :o)

31 Days of Halloween - Day 21

Wow - can you believe we're over 2/3's the way through this amazing blog hop organised by Smeared and Smudged?! Hope you're enjoying it as much as I am :). If you've gotten a little lost along the way, the blog roll is on my sidebar :)

Today I am sharing a tag I've made, with reference to Edgar Allan Poe, the gothic writer and poet.  He was one of the first gothic style writers, and in my mind his work The Raven is inextricably linked with Halloween.

I got a wonderful quote sheet from Gecko Galz to use in one of their challenges, and I have also shared this on their Facebook page :o)

I started with a Ranger tag in Kraft card (size 6 1/4" x 3 1/4") and firstly blended distress inks over it.
I used Dusty Concord, Brushed Corduroy, Faded Jeans and Spiced Marmalade to create a nice background on the tag.

I've then used some of the quotes from the Gecko Galz page, again having blended over them with distress inks, added a stamp of E A Poe himself from a Wendy Vecchi set, and a lovely little raven laser cut from That Craft Place.  I've then finished with a metal MME sentiment 'be an original' and a Tim Holtz pen-nib.  The ribbons are a velvety brown one, a striped organza one and a thinner cream coloured one.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 20

Firstly - thank you so much everyone for your lovely feedback on my shadow box!! I was away overnight (which is why this is a little late being posted) so haven't yet had chance to reply to them, but I will go back through them later on :)

Today I wanted to share a 'cutesy ' Halloween card. This image is from Dilly Beans again, and I've coloured her with my promarkers and a crayola metallic marker in silver.

I've then matted and layered her, firstly with an 'echo' outline in black card and then two layers of Halloween themed papers, finishing on a simple single fold black card.

I thought this would a complete contrast to my recent posts, and I hope you like her!

31 Days of Halloween - Day 19 - Big Reveal :o)

Well it's past midnight in the UK so I'm posting this now as have a day out planned :)

Well if you've been following along with the Smeared and Smudged blog hop you will have seen my previous posts giving little sneak peeks of today's full project.   I hope you're ready and that you're not disappointed!

Here we go then :

The little shadow box is from Tando, it's been really fun to do. I decided to just shade the frame slightly with Distress Inks in Spiced Marmalade blended with Dusty Concord. I didn't want to paint the frame on this one as I wanted the contents in each little alcove to be the main focus.

There were two cubbies I didn't share, just because they were very simple really the top left section holds a little wooden witches hat (That Craft Place) and the one on the bottom row behind the tickets is holding just some bits of ghost confetti.   I've also added a little skull headed key to the right hand side of the outer frame.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 18

Ooh - last little peek - full reveal tomorrow......

This little chap is from a King Cake that we shared when we visited my Uncle & Aunt in New Orleans earlier this year. It's a tradition that they have during Mardi Gras - somewhere in the cake the little baby is hidden - whoever finds it in their slice has to buy the next cake. I've coloured him green and wrapped a little sari ribbon around him that I've slightly discoloured with a red promarker.

The base of the little cubby hole is part of a page from a German book, I really liked the font - it's very Gothic.

By his feet you can see part of the stamped Halloween tickets that appeared in the first sneak peek (although in a different position - I changed my mind!) back on Day 9 of this month long blog hop organised d by Smeared and Smudged. I thought that it would tie all the peeks together before the full reveal.

So today is the penultimate peek - are you ready?

So this little spider looks to have caught himself a tasty steak! The flying meat digital stamp is from Wonderstrange they've got some brilliant images - well worth a look. I printed out 6 copies of the image coloured them and then layered them up. The spider is again from That Craft Place I've just coloured him black with red eyes and fangs.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 16

Hi - glad you all enjoyed yesterday's ATC and slight diversion :o)  Today I'm back with another little reveal for you from my larger project.

This is a little cameo that I've given a bit of a makeover to using my promarkers.  I guess she's not exactly scary but she has a haunting beauty.  You will maybe begin to get an idea of the layout now as the cute little stamped bat is making another appearance.  He was also in view when I shared the skull bead photo.

So just a short post today, but we are back on track for the full reveal which will be over the weekend.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 15

 Hmm I'm wondering if maybe you'd like a break from my daily reveals? There are only 4 bits to go now - but I think today I'll give you the day off from that and instead share another ATC that I made for a Halloween swap. Don't worry though - the reveals will be back tomorrow.

This uses another Stampotique stamp (totally addicted see!) Teddy.  The main background is a white card base that I've swiped Spiced Marmalade distress ink over, then the flames are a clip-art image printed on light card, cut out and stuck in place, then I've outlined the flames with orange promarker just to increase their size.

Teddy was stamped onto cardstock, fussy cut and then coloured in beiges and pale greens, then red for blood!  I stuck him in place over the flames and added a pool of blood under his feet,

The sentiment 'Something wicked this way comes' is stamped using that darling little set of alphabet stamps I've been using all week.  Such a good buy :-)

31 Days of Halloween - Day 14

Here we are again - Day 14 - I'm really enjoying this!!

Today I'm sharing a peek at this scary pumpkin :o) so another step closer to the finished piece!

The background is stamped in black archival ink on white card which I've then blended over with distress inks in Spiced Marmalade and Dusty Concord.  The pumpkin is again from That Craft Place from their Halloween grab bag.  I've left him uncoloured as I like the marking left from the laser cutting.

Hi, thanks for popping back for today's sneak peak :o)  after this there are 6 more little cubbyholes to share before revealing the full project.

The background of this came from a digital sheet Poisonous Labels, available to purchase from Ten Two Studios  I think they're great!  In front of this is a tiny little flask filled with green food colouring and a tiny stamped 'P' for poison on the front.  Hope you like!?

31 Days of Halloween - Day 11

Hi - thanks for popping back for another little look :o)  Can't believe it's Day 11 already!!

Today I'm sharing a quick view of the man himself - Edgar Allan Poe, gothic author and poet, probably best known for his poem The Raven.  Here I've used a Wendy Vecchi stamp and just slightly tinted his face with some light promarkers.

To his right is a little book, I've concertinaed some card for the inner pages and then a slightly larger piece to form a cover which I've covered with printed washi tape.  I've then finished it off by wrapping a strand of hessian string around it a few times and tying the ends together (you'll see it better on the final day of this project share :o)  )

Day 10 then - a third of the way through - I'm really enjoying this and hope you are too!

So another little sneak peak at my larger project:

A little cauldron from That  Craft Place coloured black and with a silver pentagram.  I've stamped the phrase 'hubble bubble' behind it.  The paper at the back of this little segment is from a 6 x 6 pad - 'hocus pocus' by pink paislee.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 9

Hi - thanks for joining in with this great month long blog hop!

So yesterday I promised I would be sharing snippets of a larger project and today is the first part of that.

I'm fairly sure you'll be able to guess what it is but today I'm only sharing a picture of these stamped tickets which I've fastened together with a Prima brad. When I was rooting these stamps out I was shocked to realise I've actually got at least 12 ticket stamps!! And there is another set I want too - I wonder if that signifies an addiction - lol!!

The tickets were stamped on white cardstock, cut/punched out and then coloured with Distress Inks.

Amazing Finnabair workshops

Hi, thanks for visiting :o)

As an extra post to the 31 Days ones I'm sharing this month I just had to share details of the wonderful workshops I attended over the weekend.

Sue Tucker (Art Workshops - on Facebook) had organised for this lovely, talented lady to share some of her techniques with us. I had booked my place on 2 half-day sessions months ago, and as the time got closer I was just hoping I'd be well enough to go (I have had some really bad episodes with the Fibro over the last month or so - but enough moping - on with the show and tell!!)

I'm sure if you are into Mixed Media and/or Scrapbooking you will have heard of Finnabair or at least seen her amazing creations.   If not, do please take time to visit her blog : http://tworzysko.blogspot.co.uk/?m=1 you won't regret it and that's a promise!   She also has an online shop : http://www.mixedmediaplace.com/ that's well worth a visit.

The first workshop was titled Tea for Two and as well as gaining some understanding of how Finnabair builds up the layers of embellishments she also shared a way of using tea staining.   I've always loved how this looks but been nervous of trying it myself.   Finnabair is such a good teacher that she inspires self confidence and here is the result

I just love it!! I keep looking at it and can still hardly believe that I did that!! The photo is of my parents on their wedding day, and despite being one of the few photos I have of them together (my father died when I was 10) it has mostly lived in a drawer instead of being out on display.   I decided it was time to change that and so chose this photo to take on the workshop. It was a bit scary at times - all that ink and glue flying about (not literally) - but I'm so glad I braved it out! The colours fit in perfectly with my front room so this will be on my wall :o)

The second workshop was titled Imagine.   It was another amazing experience.   We worked with creating texture and more embellishments before turning to gesso and inks to finish our pieces.

Again I am stunned with what I managed to create!!  Little old me!!

So I want to extend a massive 'thank you' to Sue, to Finnabair and also to the wonderful fellow crafters I met. These are the photos showing some very happy crafters :)

31 Days of Halloween - Day 8

So it's the beginning of week 2 :o). Thanks to all my visitors for your comments - I will pop by and return the favour shortly.

Today I'm sharing another card - this time I've used a premade green card base which had three little windows.   I thought these windows were just perfect for sharing some more Dilly Beans images. I printed these off at the same size as the windows and coloured them with promarkers, then stuck them in place.

Across the front of the card I stuck two strips of washy tape and then layered a Tim Holtz die-cut '31' cut from glittered cardstock over that.

Short and sweet today as I'm planning a bigger project to share in stages over the next few days.

31 Days of Halloween - Day 7

Wow - we're a week in!! I'd say well done for sticking with it but there's been so many marvelous makes on the hop it's probably not been that hard!!

Today I am sharing a Halloween/Dia de los Muertos door hanger.

It started as just a plain chipboard hanger, but here I've covered one side with StampinUp papers, and the other side is painted black.

On the papered side I've added a coloured MDF cat and ghost (from That Craft Place)  and a handwritten quote.

On the reverse I've added a digital stamp Sugar Skulls Stacked (from Dilly Beans) a small piece of washi tape and I've written Dia de los Muertos down the side.
